How the vertical form fill seal machines work?

The vertical form fill seal(VFFS) machine, usually called as the vertical form fill seal  packing machines , vertical packaging machine, or vertical wrapper), is able to be widely used in almost all the industries today because it is fast, easy, but economical packaging solutions that save both the packing materials( one pack by one, day by day), and the valuable plant floor space. 

I believe that you’re curious and wondering to get a general view how the vffs machine work if you're new to the packaging automation or already have some multi-function automatic vffs packaging machine systems. 

So I’m glad to share with you how a vertical form fill seal machine run to start from a roll of packaging film and end as a finished bag hereby in this article. 

Generally, the vffs machine starts with a big film roll, form the open film into a bag shape, fill the raw product into the bag, and seal it, etc. 

All the steps are to be done in a vertical way. However, there's also a lot more functions the automatic form fill seal machines can finish than the basic form, fill and seal.


1. Film assembling, Transporting  and Unwinding

vertical packing machines usually use a single sheet of packing film, or non-printed packing film material, rolled around a inner paper core(inner diameter 75mm ). 

The packing film material can be various, including all the general laminated film, such as  OPP/PE, PET/PE, Aluminum/PE, Paper/PE, Nylon/PE, filter paper, etc., and also the single layer PE( LDPE,or HDPE).  

The roll of film is placed and installed on a spindle assembly, such as recent popular air shaft,  at the rear of the VFFS machine.

When the VFFS bagging machine is started, the film is usually pulled off the roll by film transporting & pulling belt couple, which are positioned to the two sides of the forming tube at the front of the vertical ffs machine, and driven by servo motor. On some models( especially for the sauce product packing, or some special thickness film), the horizontal sealing jaw couple grip the packing film, pull down forward,  and transport it through the vertical form fill seal packaging machines without belt. 

These two methods of the film pulling& transporting are the most widely used. 

An optional unwinding wheel (rubber surface, and driven by motor) may be installed to drive the film roll as an assist to the film pulling belt couple when the film roll is big and heavy.

2. Film Guidance Tension

The open film is unwound from the roll as unwinding and passes over a dancer arm which is a weighted pivot arm as the film transporting brake located at the rear of the VFFS machine. The arm structure is consist of a series of rollers along with some related sensor. As the film transports, the arm moves up and down as the sensors’ feedback to keep the film under tension in order to ensure that the film will not wander from side to side as it is moving.

3. Coding  Printing

After  film tension, the film goes forwards through the printing unit. The Printer may be a simple ribbon printer,  thermal transfer printer, or ink-jet printer. Usually, the printer places date codes, lot number on the film, or may be used to place bar code, logos or graphics on the film.

4. Film Eye mark Tracking and Positioning

Once the film has passed under the printer, it travels past the photo cell (registration eye mark tracking detector). The photo cell detects and tracks the eye mark on printed film, controls the pull-down belt couple at the sides of the forming tube. The  eye mark tracking keeps the film positioned correctly so the film will be cut in the accurate spot.

Next, the film travels past the film transporting correction assembly. The complete transport correction assembly is shifted side to side as the film edge detecting sensors’ feedback to guide the web. If the edge of the film shifts out of position, the sensor send a generated signal input to the PLC so that the PLC can send a signal output to move the actuator and cause the correction assembly to move to one side or the other as need to bring the edge of the film back to the correct position.

5. Bag Forming

Here, the open film goes through the collar(shoulder) of the former, and enters a forming tube. When the open film crests the collar on the forming tube, it is folded around the tube to form a tube of film with the two outer edges of the film overlapping each other.

6. Bag Filling and Sealing

As the film stops moving, the heated vertical sealer bar (the usual intermittent VFFS  machine)moves forward, makes contact with the vertical overlap on the film, and bond the layers of film together. The vertical sealer bar presses itself against the forming tube and makes the vertical sealing. The continuous vertical packaging machine takes the different continuous vertical sealing model.

Next, a couple of heated horizontal sealing jaws come together to make the top seal of one bag and the bottom seal of the next bag. For intermittent VFFS machines, the film comes to a stop to receive its horizontal seal from jaws that move in an open-close motion. For continuous motion machines, the jaws themselves move in up-down and open-close motions to seal the film as it is moving. 

While the sealing jaws are closed, the product that is being dropped down the forming tube and filled into the bag. The filling head like a multi-head scale or auger filler works for the correct measurement and discharge discrete quantities of product into each bag.

7. Finished Bag cutting and outputting 

After the product has been released into the bag, the cutting blade moves forward and cuts the bag. The jaw opens and the finished bag drops. This is the end of one cycle on an automatic vertical form fill sealing packaging machine. Our VFFS equipment can complete between 30 and 100 of these cycles per minute as the different packing requirements, and the different packing machines.

The finished bag can be conveyed and output by a conveyor and transported to down-line equipments like metal detector, check weigher, x-ray machine, carton case packing machine, etc.
